So... You Want to Illustrate Your Own Book? - Illustrating Workshop with Kat Richardson

Saturday 17th October

1 - 4pm (3 hours)

Taylors Lakes Hotel - Room B

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve already illustrated a book (or two) and want to take things up a notch, this hands-on workshop will help you elevate your visual storytelling.

Because here’s the thing... illustrating a picture book isn’t just about drawing what the words say. It’s about adding meaning, emotion and depth to the story through your visuals.

What to expect:

In this small-group session, Kat will guide you through how to take a manuscript and bring it to life visually, thinking beyond the words and creating illustrations that truly support and enhance the story.

You’ll also cover the practical stuff (the things no one tells you until it’s too late 😅), including:

  • canvas size, bleed and setting up your files correctly

  • choosing and building colour palettes

  • how to take traditional artwork (paper + pencil) and bring it into a digital format

This session is designed for beginners using Procreate but the principles apply no matter how you like to create.

Just a heads up - this isn’t a “how to draw” class. It’s about learning how to illustrate a book.

What to bring:

  • your charged iPad (with Procreate installed)

  • notepad and pen

  • Apple Pencil

OR paper and pencils if you prefer to go old school (no paints please)
